This contemplative anthem by Karen Shell is a post-communion prayer reflecting on the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the many blessings conferred upon us as we commune with the divine.

The SATB voices enter softly and begin to interweave over keyboard accompaniment that pulses like a calm heartbeat. Though the harmonic structure is unmistakably tonal, the chords have tasteful clusters and passing dissonances.   As the voices rise with requests for the many graces the Eucharist provides, the harmony takes a rhapsodic departure from the key of B-flat into distant E, as if transported at the thought of being filled with divine love.  The music winds back down to the slow heartbeat, allowing time to bask in the glow of grace and to give quiet thanks for this wonderful sacrament.

This year, the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi, also called “The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ,” falls on June 18th.  If your choir is still in session, you may want to consider In Communion as your meditative choral selection for that day.
